K-2
The purpose of K-2 music is for students to experience and explore the wonder of music. Although there are measurable skills at each level, our goal at St. Ann's is to instill a love and appreciation for the arts in our students, while creating a strong foundation in fundamentals. Children attain this by "playing in" and experiencing the subject matter. We also want students to be able to participate as fully as possible in our weekly prayer services and Mass. Knowing the music is a wonderful way to engage them in prayer and celebration of the Mass.
Students receive a daily grade, of a possible 10 points, based on participation.
3-4
3rd graders begin playing flutophones. I like the flutophone for a beginning wind instrument because the finger holes are raised, making them easier for students to feel. 4th graders upgrade to recorders. Learning these instruments is an important experience in musical development and prepares students for band, if they decide to choose that option in middle school.
Students receive a daily grade, of a possible 10 points, based on participation and focus on the director/teacher. Students will also receive performance evaluations each quarter. Performance evaluations are specific to the scale or song which the student is expected to play and will be graded using a rubric.
Grades are weighted this way:
Daily Grades = 70%
Performance Evaluations = 20%
Quizzes = 10%

5-8
My over-arching goals for students in grades 5-8 are:
Students receive a daily grade of 10 points, which is based on their preparation for and participation in class. Excused absences will not affect the daily grade. Unexcused absences will result in a loss of points, which will affect the daily grade.
Grades are weighted this way:
Daily Grades = 60%
